If you wish to offer a catalogue of items for people to browse through and then pay for online, a shopping cart is what you require.

What is a Shopping Cart?

If you have ever purchased anything online from a catalogue (such as books from Amazon.com), you will have some experience of using a shopping cart. An online transaction is very similar to mail order. Customers select what they want and fill in their credit card details, mailing address and other relevant information. The big difference is the speed at which an order can reach you, and the liberating fact that the customer does not have to wait until your business opens in the morning to place an order (while you sleep, people can be buying your stock!)

A shopping cart program simply lets the visitor browse through a catalogue of products, and when they find an item they wish to purchase, they can add it to a shopping cart (in much the same way as you would add an item to a basket if you were in a supermarket). On reaching the checkout, you would be reminded of all items you have requested to purchase. You would have the option to change the details of what you have ordered eg remove an item, or change the quantity. You would then enter your payment details and the goods would be despatched as agreed.
